Preston Chess Club

It is with sadness that we report that Denis Lane (Blackpool Chess Club) passed away last week. Denis was 98. Denis was also a keen supporter of chess within the Blackpool & Flyde area, serving as Chairperson and Secretary of the league.

If you wish to enter the club championship, 5 round swiss format, please e-mail me at prestonchessclub@lancashirechess.uk - or add a comment to the main story. Entries to me by Sunday 6th October for the 1st round pairing. Late entries accepted up to draw for Round 2.

Fylde Championship - in interested the please contact John Cooper (cooper72man@gmail.com) ASAP if you wish to enter. Championship operates as a 5 round swiss over the course of the season. No entry feed, and trophies for the winner and junior champion.

The Annual Silver Queen Tournament will be held at Preston on Wednesday September 18th. Register at 7:30pm for a 7:45pm start.

It will be a 6 round swiss tournament with about 10 minutes each on the clock.

Entry fee is £3 which will be redistributed as prizes according to
the number of entrants ( Hopefully 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes and a grading prize
based on the average grade of entrants).

The tournament is open to any player of a club in the Blackpool and Fylde league.

The last meeting at Beer Brothers PR1 (Formerly Ale Emporium) will be on Wednesday March 20th. The first meeting at the new venue, Jalgos will be on Wednesday March 27th.

Instead of the cancelled Christmas Blitz I am going to run a 10 minute tournament for anyone that wants to come down.

With the uncertainty about the venue, and needing to keep options open for re-arranged matches I have not had the opportunity to pick a good date for the Christmas Blitz.

Alas, the only date available 19th December would have been the only Wednesday in December that I personally cannot make - a bit difficult holding a tournament on my Wedding Anniversary :)

I will be looking at a date in January, so keep your eyes peeled!

We understand that the club venue Mad Hatters will be closed on Wednesday December 5th so there will be no chess club then. But that it will be open on December 12th (with the pub under new owners) so chess club will be on again then.

A summer Blitz tournament will be held on Wednesday 22nd August.

There will be 9 rounds of 5-minute blitz. All good fun, a great night out and a bit of chess fun.

Peter Jowett is the current Christmas Blitz champion, will he be crowned the Summer Blitz King! Or is there someone else waiting in the wings!

Ideally, let me know in advance if you wish to enter. I can add you in on the night, but it delays the draw a little.

Prompt Start at 7:45 pm! There will be a short break between Rounds 5 and 6.
